These images are offered as an artsource. Vikings reveled in using animal forms, knots and twisty orms in various configurations to fill up a space. Not just jewelry but everyday items were decorated in some fashion in dynamic artforms. As they travelled and were exposed to other artforms, instead of being overtaken, the Viking artisan reinvented them into a unmistakeable art styles of their own. A rich tradition of carving in wood, antler, walrus, bone, stone, and other mediums.
The first image example is from an 8th Century Viking Art style called "Broa" from a set of horse bridle pieces found in Sweden. The animalforms are abstract representations that have quite popular in this region for decoration. This one is taken from a brooch found near Kaasta, Uppland Sweden Another is the "Oseberg" style taken from the richly decorated ship found there.Oseberg keel Both Broa and Oseberg show the early Scandinavians to have fully realized vibrant art dating from the Migration/Vendal Period and before. An example of the late 9th centuryBorre "ringknot" style: Sword guard decoration in later Jellinge Art style. Here is a more modern adaptation of the "Jellinge Great Beast" done as a back tattoo. The style takes it's name from a group of carved stones commissioned by King Harald Bluetooth setup Jellinge Denmark in the 10th Century. The Mammen Art overlaps the Jellinge period and takes it's name from a male gravefind in Mammen Denmark. The famous Mammen axe and the Bamberg Casket shows it full flowering. But Viking Art changes and here s a Bronze Weather Vane in Late 10th to mid11th Century Viking Era "Ringerike" Art style: Hedden Norway But also it was used on ordinary objects like these walking sticks from Dublin and Lund The late 11th-12th CenturyUrnes style whose name is taken from a stave church panel in Norway. This famous "Sigurd the Dragon Slayer" woodcarving is from the 12th Century "Urnes/Romanesque" period. But this Swedish bench carving from the same era shows it's Pagan Viking artstyle roots. Here is a site about "caskets" and the making of one. Caskets were just small, or not so small, chests for just about anything a well born or a church wanted to put into. Some were Requelaries used in churches and since many were finely decorated...it was portable loot. The ones show span the Viking period and show a number of art styles that was used from their areas. The Bamberg and Cammin Caskets shown are examples of the Viking/Norse "Mammen" Art style. Caskets Just click onto the images for enlargement. Here is a site showing all the sides of the 8th century Franks' Casket: http://www.djbeard.demon.co.uk/ansax/casket/intro.htm Here is another site showing reproduction Viking bonework with a case carved in Mammen style, a comb and a bone spoon: http://www.regia.org/bonework1.htm Another showing a b/w drawing of a "flattening" board made from Whalebone. Using a rounded glass ball, clothing could be "ironed" after washing. http://www.regia.org/images/plaque.gif Another for "fun and games": http://www.regia.org/games.htm a painting showing a Jarl: http://www.valhs.org/history/articl...ty/pix/jarl.jpg [This message has been edited by Laurie (edited June 21, 2000).] Last edited by Laurie : 11-19-2005 at 10:00 PM. |

Mad Hatter was asking a question about drinking horns...what could be drunk out of one and where you can get one. Also if anything else it could be used for.
Just about anything really can be drunk out of one, beer, mead, water, pop.....very versitile. They have been used for containers for various things. Polished horns can be bought most anywhere such as Tandy Leather or online. Here is a url of a horn, my husband and I decorated for another Asatru gythja a couple of years ago. She is an Oðin's Gyðja, so the horn decoration reflects that...the designs on the bands were based on Rune Picture Stones ideas. Drinking Horn You can click on the "horndetails' where she explains the symbols behind the designs. This is just one of many horns I have decorated over the years and we generally coat the inside with beeswax. But you can find plainer ones to use. Not many actual horns have survived from the Viking Age and still fewer decorated ones but some mounts have. Here is the early Anglo Saxon "Taplow Horn". Although not Viking, still you can judge for yourself the extent a rich Jarl would go to have a special horn decorated. A small picture of a pair of Viking age Drinking horns from Sweden. But the Vikings also imported Frankish glass "drinking horns" too. Last edited by Laurie : 11-19-2005 at 10:45 PM. |
