Rune 7th Anniversary Contest Starts Today!

That's Right!!! It starts today!!

Rune 7th Anniversary Contest!!

Hello, Rune fans around the world! Got a good Viking level, drawing, or story on the brain? Then get it down and digital and submit it to the Rune 7th Anniversary Contest!

To celebrate the 7th anniversary of Rune's release, Human Head Studios, RuneGame.com, Rune2.netare sponsoring a taking-all-comers contest for original creative content based on themes, characters, and environments from the Rune universe.

Prizes: The T-Shirts

There are fifteen equal prizes: T-shirts from a very limited run of same, specially designed by Human Head and that evoke the original “developer” shirts from Rune’s release.

The Competitive Categories

There are three submission categories, with five prizes in each category:

Mapping

Please submit your very best multiplayer Rune map for consideration. There can be only one map per entrant. The zip file size should be no more than 3mb. The map should be accompanied by any necessary additional documentation (readme.txt) and any necessary support files so that it can be easily accessed and played. The map does not have to be brand-new for the contest; you may submit existing work for consideration.

However, the map must not have been submitted to any previous mapping contest.

The maps will be judged on flow and balance, creativity, aesthetic quality and consistency, performance, and the all-important “fun factor.”

Fiction

Have you been inspired by the Rune universe? Either continuing Ragnar's adventure, or introduce other characters of the Viking age? Here is your chance! Send in your stories -- We would love to read them!

Please submit your very finest literary treatment of Viking lore set in the Rune universe. The work should be no more than thirty pages, and may be a short story or may constitute a chapter in a larger work. Regardless, the submitted writing should stand on its own and encapsulate a story or event. The work should be submitted in English, and there must be only one submission per entrant.

The work will be judged on creativity and creative use of the Rune characters and their universe. It will also be judged on the quality of the writing itself: command of the language, proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and the writer’s personal flair

Concept and Illustration

Please submit your vision of the Rune World and its denizens, both known and as yet undiscovered, in JPG format for consideration. The work will be judged on a number of merits: originality, creativity, execution and aesthetics, style and overall completeness of the effort. There can be only one submission per entrant in this category.

Concept work will tend toward the visual realization of new characters and environments within the Rune universe.

Illustrative work will tend toward a narrative or aesthetic expression of characters and environments within the Rune universe.

Submissions and Moderators

An individual may make a single submission into no more than two of the three categories as identified above: Fiction, Mapping, and Concept/Illustration. All work submitted for judging must be original.

In any category, any submission that is determined in Human Head’s sole discretion to have been plagiarized will be removed from consideration.

The moderators for the contest are Laurie Wise of RuneGame, Phil (Socketboy) Pliuskonis of Rune2, and Ted Halsted of Human Head Studios. Human Head Studios reserves the right to make final decisions on matters relating to the contest and the awarding of prizes.

Duration of Contest

The contest will run between March 1st and May 1st. This is the time frame in which you must make your formal submission to the website

There will then be a ten-day period for voting. The winners will be formally announced on May 15th. The moderators will then collect the addresses of the winners and a brand-new Ragnar T-shirt will be on its way to your mailbox from Human Head Studios.

Voting

The entries will be posted on the Rune 7th Anniversary website and will be voted on there by Rune fans and Human Head staff. Each voter gets to put a vote into each category, for a total of three votes.

In the case of a tie, an additional T-shirt will be awarded.

The Vibe

Just as the Rune game is about competition with a grin, so is this Rune contest. It’s about celebrating people’s creative abilities and a game we love to play. Everyone at Human Head and the Rune community looks forward to seeing all of your creative endeavors!

Additional

These limited-run T-shirts are intended as prizes, and there are currently no plans to sell them on the Human Head Website.

Legal

All submissions become the property of Human Head Studios. Human Head Studios retains the right, but has no obligation, to use any submission, a facsimile of any submission or any derivative of any submission in any upcoming Rune-related video game title or for any purpose whatsoever. Contest participants retain no rights, moral or otherwise, in any contest submission. Any disputes related to the contest shall be resolved by Human Head Studios in their sole discretion, and contest participants agree to be bound by these terms through their act of participation.

Woot - I can't wait to see what everyone's got.

Also don't worry, I'll have the submissions page fully functional in a couple of days.

....There was a very good reason why I started that "What makes a good Map" thread....so now you all know. But I could not let on...Yet I DID want to know myself.

However......

The Rune 7th Anniversary Contest is not just about Mapping.....Fan Fiction is one of three competitive submission categories too. So I truly would like to see some written to be submitted. I know the Fiction ruling that all submissions be in English might discourage any non primary English writers from doing so.

However, Do Not let this stop you from Trying . We Are Not going to be your "tyrannical English Teacher" who nit picks everything apart.

It is our sincere hope this Category will be an inspiration to any budding Runegamer author who wanted to continue the "Tale". Whether English is your primary language or not.

Be clear. Be understood. Get your storyline together and like the Storyteller in RUNE.... tell the tale.....

I was under the impression that "Concept and Illustration"....was to design "new characters", "creatures", "items", "scenery" or even "worlds" which have never before existed. "Skinning" is one aspect of Concept Art by taking a existing model/skeleton and creatively redressing it...

Although "Skinning" contests have been done before. It was briefly discussed to include this too but it was felt to keep the competitive categories to just three. Also to appeal to the Community as a whole. Not everyone Maps, Not everyone can write a story.....but "Concept and Illustration"? Now that is different.

You would have to have a sketch, drawing or painting of what you intend doing, wouldn't you?.

I don't see why not. Just get some good screen shots of it. Don't submit it as just a skin file but if you have an image of it - it would work fine.
Just use that plan camera command and get a nice shot from a good angle...
maybe cut it out in a photo editor and you've go yourself a classy art submission

Would it be allowed to work as a team (uncaring of the the prizes) as long as the work for the competition is submitted under one name? (coughcough).

For the "Bragging Rights", I presume?

(would be very interesting to see just how many wearers can fit inside one Extra Large t-shirt at the same time)

Understand.

To be fair, I expect whomever is that entrant is......is THE "major" contributor, though. Whether or not if that entrant is interested in a prize IF they win. No guarantees. But, hey.....this gives all of you a chance to show off your best, right?

Just as a reminder (considering the contest rules are such a "long read" for most) In the three competitive categories there are five prizes to be won. For a total of fifteen prizes. So there are plenty of chances.

And I am sure there are going to be more than just "five" entrants in each category.

Quote:
An individual may make a single submission into no more than two of the three categories as identified above: Fiction, Mapping, and Concept/Illustration.
So no individual can win three prizes in all three categories.

As a mother of a "20 something" gamer son (who sometimes forgets), a reminder to any winner who does win two shirts? ...to wash them more often between wearings

question, will there be any restrictions to this contest such as country or age?
it would suck to win the prizes and not be able to enjoy them just cuz they wont be able to ship them to my country.

I think we decided on that size because we didn't want a lot of huge maps, but if textures and such are a part of it, I don't care if it is over 3MB - Laurie what do you think?

OK I am going to just say that's fine. I'll update the wording to reflect that.
Also - if you could include a small screenshot of your map in the file, I'll be putting that up as well.

Thanks

VikingWasDead: 300 x 300 or smaller.

The 3mb was decided upon as an "average". Most maps, even past best ones, were in that range as downloads. There were always a few larger made.

Quote:
The map should be accompanied by any necessary additional documentation (readme.txt) and any necessary support files so that it can be easily accessed and played.
Like Socketboy said, "textures and such" take up a lot.....so your size is fine by me.

Even so, what makes a "fun" map does not necessarily mean a larger one is best, anymore than a smaller one. As long as a certain factors apply.

Quote:
The maps will be judged on flow and balance, creativity, aesthetic quality and consistency, performance, and the all-important “fun factor.”

Awhile back, I tried out a huge MP map that was interesting to roam through.
Thought this person showed some good creative ideas and concept. Liked some aspects of it, myself. but thought lacking in some areas as defined above. With a bit more work in those areas....

"Why" I started that "What makes a good map" subject thread.

By the way, while in the RUNE 1.00 MP servers recently, I had been asked if this was just another "Hov Contest" (Mapping) I just want to make this clear....

BOTH. If if were not for RUNE SP and it's MP, then Rune: Halls of Valhalla would never have existed.

"Fiction", "Concept and Illustration" goes even further.

Fiction......
Quote:
will be judged on creativity and creative use of the Rune characters and their universe

Concept.....
Quote:
will tend toward the visual realization of new characters and environments within the Rune universe.

Illustrative work.....
Quote:
will tend toward a narrative or aesthetic expression of characters and environments within the Rune universe.

"10mb"

"Sigh", just as present demo downloads have become as huge as full games in the past. With all the graphics and textures THOSE have. I guess to expect larger maps sizes for similar reasons.

If the textures are part of the .run....then there shouldn't be any problem with access would it? What do you think, socketboy?

Rune's total is 651megs. That's an average demo nowadays. "sigh".

Let me know after you've submitted it and let me make sure that large of a file was actually accepted by the system.

Thanks
